Happenings. An Illustrated Anthology

New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc., 1965. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher’s black cloth over marble paper-covered boards, spine stamped in orange and white, terracotta endpapers, original illustrated dust jacket.

First edition of drama professor Michael Kirby’s account of the proto-performance art movement. Coined by artist Allan Kaprow in 1959, "happenings" are live-action events influenced by Italian Futurist performance, blending Dadaism, Surrealism, abstract expressionism, and avant-garde theater. The art form proliferated in the 1960s and was taken up by several Pop artists. This detailed exposition on early happenings comprises scripts, descriptions, and statements on productions by forerunners and leading practitioners of the form (Krapow, Jim Dine, Claes Oldenburg, Red Grooms, and Robert Whitman) alongside critical and historical text by Kirby. Copiously illustrated with over 70 black-and-white photos documenting each cited happening. Dust jacket designed by writer and illustrator Ellen Raskin, best known for her novel for young readers The Westing Game. Slight lean to spine, abrasion to front endpaper from sticker removal, light rubbing to spine-ends; unclipped dust jacket with light chipping to spine-ends and sunning to spine. Very good.
