Paper. Fun & Games. August 1984

New York: Paper Publishing Co., 1984. Quarto, publisher's printed newsprint folded in eights (measures 39" x 26.5" fully open).

"Smash the city and know the ropes." Early issue of irreverent downtown fashion, nightlife, and culture magazine Paper. Founders Kim Hastreiter and David Hershkovits were editors and journalists at the alternative SoHo Weekly News, and started Paper out of Hastreiter's Tribeca loft after SWN folded. The magazine, which provided intel on the latest clubs, music, art, fashion, film, and more during a feverishly fertile period in the downtown scene, was a laboratory for creative collaboration, regularly featuring work by a diverse group of artists, designers, and writers, including Robert Mapplethorpe, Agnes B., Keith Haring, Bill T. Jones, Willi Smith, Patricia Field, and many more. The earliest issues, from the mid-1980s, unfold into a giant poster sporting a riotous paste-up collage of print, photography, illustration, and ads for local bars, clubs, galleries, and boutiques (Pyramid, Danceteria, Fun Gallery, Screaming Mimi's, and on and on), mostly in black-and-white with occasional splashes of color. Hastreiter and Hershkovits remained at the mag through the "Break the Internet" era, selling it in 2017. Print production ceased with the onset of Covid-19, with all editorial operations shutting down in April 2023. Light creasing and edgewear. Near fine. Rare. Item #7546
