I Am Curious (Blue). A Film by Vilgot Sjöman

New York: Grove Press, Inc., 1970. 1st US Edition. 12mo, publisher’s blue cloth, spine stamped in white and metallic blue, original photo-illustrated dust jacket.

First US edition of the complete scenario to Vilgot Sjöman’s 1968 film. A Swedish novelist, director, and protégé of Ingmar Bergman, Sjöman is best known for his controversial I Am Curious… film series. Starring Sjöman and Lena Nyman, the erotic dramas–originally intended to be one sequence–follow the life of a young and inexperienced theater student and self-described political rebel as she wanders the streets of Stockholm. (Yellow) was released in 1967, with (Blue), which takes place before and after the first film, in 1968. Both films were banned from entry into the US due to their explicit sex scenes which were grounds for obscenity charges. Several film critics and writers (including Norman Mailer) came to the film’s defense along with Grove Press founder Beckett Rosset, who defended the film in front of a federal jury in 1968. Later that year, it premiered in the US and was a record breaking sensation. Illustrated in black-and-white with over 200 film stills. Fine in unclipped dust jacket. Item #7515
