On the Street. 1980-1990

New York: Welcome Books, 2006. 1st Edition. Folio, publisher's dark khaki cloth spine, original photo-illustrated thick paper boards.

Inscribed first edition of American photographer Amy Arbus’s celebrated collection of fashion photography. From 1980 through 1991 Arbus captured over 500 images of New York artists (such as Joey Arias and Phoebe Legere), musicians (including the Clash and the book’s cover star Madonna), and various edgy passersby for her column "On the Street" in the style section of the Village Voice. This gathering of 70 of her best scenester portraits embodies the era’s downtown scene, as well as the carefree spirit of pre-AIDS New York. In 2012, a documentary by John Spellos was released featuring Arbus tracking down and interviewing some of her most iconic subjects, the process of which began while she was compiling images for this book. Introduction by novelist A.M. Holmes. Illustrated with throughout with large-format black-and-white plates. Inscribed on the half-title: "for Heather / Amy Arbus." First printing, with complete number row to copyright page. No dust jacket, as issued. Original Cohen Amador Gallery exhibition card laid in. Lightest rubbing to spine-ends and corners. Near fine.
