Matthew Barney: New Work
San Francisco: San Francisco Museum of Art, 1991. 1st Edition. Oblong quarto, publisher’s stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps.
Catalog published in conjunction with a 1991-92 exhibition of American contemporary artist Matthew Barney's work at SFMoMA. Now an art world celebrity, Barney was recruited by Yale as a football player in the 1980s and worked as a model to put himself through school. Much of his early performance-based media work explores gender, androgyny, physical strength, and restraint. His first solo museum show, held only two years after he graduated college, presented the 24-year-old Barney’s sculptures and video work. The show was an early exhibition in SFMoMA’s "New Work" series, which also provided an early platform for Marilyn Minter, Kara Walker, and Christopher Wool. Illustrated with full-bleed color plates; with index, exhibition checklist, chronology, and selected bibliography. Lightest edgewear to wraps, else fine. Item #7118
