Bilingual Russian-English illustrated biography of Russian poet and memoirist Marina Tsvetaeva. Admired by Susan Sontag and Joseph Brodsky ("No more passionate voice ever sounded in Russian poetry of the 20th century") Tsvetaeva’s work is acclaimed for its polyphonic and heightened style. As it was not well received by the Bolshevik régime, her work did not begin to appear more widely until the 1960s. This overview of her life comprises over 140 photos of the poet, her friends, and her milieu alongside text from her prose and letters. Founded in 1971 by Carl and Ellendea Proffer (the book’s editor), Ardis published Russian literature in the original language for expatriate Russians and scholars in the US.
