While predominantly known for his extensive career in film as the auteur of Easy Rider and for his acting roles in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), Apocalypse Now (1979), and Blue Velvet (1986), Hopper was an active artist and collector throughout his life. This landmark retrospective of his visual art presented paintings, photographs, and assemblages Hopper produced from 1955, when he began his artistic practice in earnest through the encouragement of James Dean, to 2000.
