New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1922. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher's blue cloth, spine and upper board gilt, original illustrated dust jacket.
First edition of Wharton's international novel of manners, her first after winning the Pulitzer Prize, in 1920, for The Age of Innocence. In the scarce dust jacket – depicting an Italian garden bathed in the light of a full moon – which in its color scheme and evocative air of romance, anticipates the dust jacket artwork for F. Scott's Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, published three years later. With four pages of publisher's ads bound in the rear. Spine slightly rolled, light foxing and embrowning to endpapers, spine dulled, cloth somewhat dusty. Unclipped dust jacket (with publisher's ads printed to verso) moderately chipped at spine-ends and flap folds, with some edgewear. Withal, a better than good copy. Item #687
