Secrets of Real Estate
St. Louis: Sheldon Art Galleries, 2008. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's illustrated stiff paper wraps.
Signed catalog published on the occasion of a 2008 exhibition by American photographer John Gossage. Sheldon Art Galleries commissioned Gossage to create a series of photos in St. Louis, though the project grew into a larger body of work investigating the “right now” of “not iconic” American life. The black-and-white photos capture the fractured histories present in St. Louis–the “Gateway to the West”–in the midst of re-development and unknowingly on the brink of the 2008 housing bubble. Like many of his monographs, Gossage designed the book himself, though Secrets of Real Estate is his second experiment with using print-on-demand technology for a limited edition. Each photo appears on the right-hand side page, while on the left is a small detail reproduced from that same photo. Signed on title page. Fine. Item #6837
