Meeting the Master

New York: Prowess Press, 1995. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.

Inscribed first edition collection of erotica by American writer and former stripper Elissa Wald. An underground cult classic and Wald's debut work, the collection comprises over twenty stories and poems linked by BDSM themes. Inscribed on title page to Helen Wolff, a feminist, sex-positive activist, and the owner of storied midtown New York City sex shop Come Again: "To Helen / Thanks so much for your interest, and for your support at this early, critical stage of the game. I hope you enjoy it! / Elissa Wald.” Wolff fought and beat zoning regulations imposed on sex shops in the 1990s by the city council and Rudy Giuliani, part of a battery of "quality of life" initiatives foisted on the city during his administrations that had a transformational effect on the street life and culture of New York. Laid in is a handwritten note on pink stationery from Wald to a Come Again employee regarding consigning copies of her book to the shop. Fine. Item #6742
