Dance Magazine. October 1978

New York: Danad Publishing Company, Inc., 1978. Quarto, publisher's stapled photo-illustrated wraps.

October 1978 issue of William Como’s influential dance world journal. Originally established in 1927 as a monthly, Dance Magazine was acquired by Como in 1969 after working at the publication for 15 years. Already a prominent figure in the dance community, his tenure was transformative to the publication and the world of dance at large. As editor-in-chief, Como championed emerging dance companies while promoting young dancers, choreographers, and dance appreciation initiatives, making it the main national source for dance internationally. Como was also the founding editor of After Dark (1968-1983), also owned by Danad Publishing Company. A subtly queer New York-based monthly, After Dark covered everything cultural, high and low: dance, art, theater, film, celebrity, fashion, and city life. This issue comprises several articles on Alvin Ailey's American Dance Theater, including a profile of cover star Clive Thompson (who was a leading soloist at the time). Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photos by After Dark regular contributors Kenn Duncan and Jack Mitchell and acclaimed performing arts photographer Martha Swope. Volume LII, No. 10. Wraps partially detached at two staples but still holding. Light creasing and edgewear. Very good. Item #6441
