Cameraworks. True to Life

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1984. 1st US Edition. Large quarto, publisher's white cloth, spine stamped in black, original photo-illustrated dust jacket.

Signed first edition of pop artist Hockney's collection of Polaroid- and photo-collages from the early 1980s, composite works that, according to the artist, "describe how we see – not all at once, but in discrete, separate glimpses...to synthesize a living impression" (from the dust jacket flap). Swimming pools, landscapes, interiors, people. Illustrated with 122 color and black-and-white plates and 53 in-text reproductions; with a list of plates, and an essay by New Yorker writer Weschler: "One of the most striking things about these Polaroid grids is the way they meld and confound the distinction between the rational and the sensual. The grid bestows an evenness, an equivalence over the entire visual field, and yet, within this field, a thousand details are endlessly divulging themselves. There is a saturation, almost an over-saturation of pleasure which yet is tempered to a kind of serenity by the democratic matrix of the grid." Dust jacket designed by branding and design guru Peter Arnell. Signed in red and blue on title page. Small stain and puncture to lower cloth; unclipped dust jacket with split at bottom corner of lower flap-fold, old tape repair to verso. Near fine. Item #6252
