42nd Street Studio. Introduction by Linda Nochlin
New York: Pyxidium Press, 1980. 1st Edition. Large slim folio, publisher's glossy photo-illustrated paper-covered boards, illustrated endpapers, original photo-illustrated dust jacket.
"We are reminded by these photographs that although erotic attitudes and sexual appetites are shaped by social conventions, inflected by the taboos of the community, in our encounters with sex, as in that final one with death, we are all ultimately alone." Collection of black-and-white photos of sex workers shot in the late 1970s by Yale MFA graduate and mentee of Walker Evans Joyce Baronio. Baronio interrogates the discrepancy between image and fantasy through her at times overtly performative and at others incredibly vulnerable approach. A distinct juxtaposition between the small, evidently cramped nature of her tiny studio on 42nd street and the wild fantasies being displayed by Baronio’s models enlists the viewer's complicity and engagement. Illustrated with dozens of large-format black-and-white plates; with a forward by Baronio, and an introduction by art historian Linda Nochlin. Corners bumped, unclipped jacket with light creasing to corners; previous ownership signature to first blank page. Near fine. Item #6106
