Antonio's Tales from the Thousand and One Nights

New York: Stewart, Tabori & Chang, Publishers, 1985. Signed Limited Edition. Quarto, publisher's blue cloth, spine and boards gilt, original illustrated dust jacket, original gilt-decorated blue cloth slipcase.

Signed limited edition of Nuyorican fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez’s illustrated version of the classic cycle of Middle Eastern tales. Believed to have been composed sometime between the 10th and 14th centuries, the Nights became popular throughout Europe in the early 1700s. While often presented for children’s entertainment, Lopez’s renderings of swarthy men, sensual scenes, and various pleasures of the flesh are for adult eyes only. Interpreting thirteen of the most captivating stories adapted from the famed translation by Sir Richard Burton, these exquisite illustrations reveal the latent passion and eroticism that permeates Shahzarad's tales. (The book was notably the inspiration for Marc Jacobs’s 2007 Arabian Nights event.) Lopez came to New York from Puerto Rico as a child and attended the High School of Music and Art and FIT. Over the years, he worked at the New York Times, Women's Wear Daily, and in collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld, and his work appeared regularly in Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview, and Harper's Bazaar. His stylized portraits and flamboyant use of color set the mold for 80s fashion illustrators. He died in 1987, at the age of 44 from AIDS-related complications. Vividly illustrated throughout in color and black-and-white. Number 24 of 250 signed and numbered copies in a slipcase and with a signed and numbered print laid in. Fine. Item #6040
