Athens, Greece: Deste Foundation, 2010. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's stapled photo-illustrated stiff paper wraps, illustrated throughout with full-page color plates.
First issue of Italian sculptor Cattelan and photographer Ferrari's stylish and irreverent bi-annual magazine of staged, manipulated, or otherwise fabricated photo-imagery. "In Toilet Paper, the images might appear to have been appropriated from the world's most surreal stock-photograph service, but they're all made from scratch...Many images are rejected, [Cattelan] said, because they're 'not Toilet Paper enough.' What makes a Toilet Paper photo? 'We keep homing in on what a Toilet Paper image is. Like distilling a perfume. It's not about one particular style or time frame; what makes them Toilet Paper is a special twist. An uncanny ambiguity'" (New Yorker). Contributors include Jacopo Emiliani, Alberto Zanetti, Elisabetta Claudio, Federico Albertini and Andrea Mineo. To date, 16 regular issues have been published, as well as several special and collaborative editions. This first issue was published with two variant cover images, each by now quite scarce. Lightest rubbing to spine-ends and spine. Near fine. Item #602
