Écoute, Mon Ami

Écoute, Mon Ami. Couverture et Illustrations de Christian Bérard

Paris: Flammarion, 1952. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher’s printed ivory paper wraps, unopened, original illustrated dust jacket.

Essay collection by French actor, director, and filmmaker Louis Jouvet, illustrated by French artist and frequent Vogue contributor Christian “Bébé” Bérard. Jouvet, who trained as a pharmacist, abandoned the profession to pursue a career as a stage manager at Jacques Copeau's Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier in 1913. He went on to become one of the great figures of modern theater, collaborating with playwright Jean Giraudoux, directing the Théâtre de l'Athénée, forming an association of theater directors, and starring in over 30 films. Published one year after his death, the present text contains his reflections and meditations on acting, inspired by performers he met and trained over the course of his career. Illustrator Bérard died while working on the costumes and sets for Jouvet’s production of Les Fourberies de Scapin. Illustrated with a frontispiece and black-and-white vignettes. Text in French. An unnumbered out-of-series copy from a total limitation of 220, with a print by Bérard laid in. Closed tear to top edge of one signature. Light edgewear to unclipped dust jacket, some soiling to print. Very good. Item #5947
