Chilly Scenes of Winter

Garden City: Doubleday, 1976. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher's blue cloth over grey paper covered boards, spine stamped in silver, original dust jacket.

Inscribed first edition of acclaimed American author Ann Beattie’s debut novel. This copy is inscribed on the front free endpaper "For Kim / Shiver with chilly scenes / Best wishes Ann Beattie" and belonged to Kim Herzinger, a literary scholar and owner of Left Bank Books from 2005-2015. Issued simultaneously with her haunting and gently humorous short story collection Distortions, the dual publication succeeded in establishing her as a defining voice of her generation. The book received a film adaptation written and directed by Joan Micklin Silver, originally released as Head Over Heels in 1978. Although a box-office bust, Silver was able to pull off a new version with Beattie’s original title which was re-released in 1982 to a warm reception. Dust jacket designed by Paul Bacon, prolific illustrator and pioneer of the “big book look”; author photo by artist Trisha Orr. Light rubbing to spine ends; unclipped dust jacket with light wear to edges, rubbing to spine head, light browning to verso. Near fine. Item #5876
