Malmö: [N.p.], c.1971. 1st Edition. Small quarto, publisher's illustrated stiff paper wraps attached to accordion-style textblock, lithographically printed in color on heavy stock.
Presumed first edition of French-American artist Saint Phalle's charmingly amorous artist book, printed entirely in color lithography in a leporello, or accordion-style, format. Composed as a love letter to her second husband, the Swiss kinetic sculptor Jean Tinguely, the book poses, then answers, a series of questions of the artist's inamorato, and generally celebrates their love affair in a collage of images in Saint Phalle's signature exuberant and naïve style. Saint Phalle and Tinguely had been a couple for a decade before marrying in 1971 (the year commonly cited for this publication, though no publication information is given apart from the lithographer and printer). Interestingly, the book concludes with the dissolution of the romance into an enduring Platonic friendship, the same fate shared by Saint Phalle and Tinguely, who separated two years later. Gift inscription in blue marker to first page, some soiling to wraps, including approx. 2" stain to rear wrap near spine. Very good. Item #587
