New York: Charles Payne, 1950. Quarto, publisher's stapled wraps lithographed in color.
1950 annual program for the preeminent American Ballet Theatre, commemorating its tenth anniversary season, illustrated throughout with lush black-and-white photos by George Platt Lynes, Paul Radkai, and Fred Fehl. Co-directors Lucia Chase and Oliver Smith joined the company in 1945 and served for 35 years, one of the longest tenures in American dance history. The present program contains brief production notes on the season, a ten-year chronology of the company, an introductory text by Chase and Smith, and numerous portrait photos by 20th-century master Lynes, as well as by fashion photographer Radkai, and performance candids by prolific mid-century photographer of theater and dance Fehl. Among the dancers depicted are such notables as Igor Youskevitch, Nora Kaye, Nana Gollner, Hugh Laing, John Kriza, and Diana Adams. Original pictorial wrappers illustrated in color by Hungarian costume designer and illustrator Marcel Vertès; ornately designed color centerspread listing the entire company. General overall wear and soiling to wraps, a few signatures loose with one detached. Very good. Item #5768
