First issue of this influential UK film magazine dedicated to leftist politics and the avant-garde, with contributions by Brazilian Cinema Nova filmmaker Glauber Rocha, London Film-Makers' Co-op co-founder Simon Hartog, Christoph Griecke on pioneering Soviet filmmaker Dziga Vertov, and two pieces by Godard. "With the boom in intellectual exploration of the cinema in the wake of the turbulent 60s, as semiologists and radical theorists turned to the field, Britain produced its fair share of internatioanlly acknowledged magazine leaders. The two best, marking the extremes of this approach, are probably Screen (1969-) and Afterimage (1970-)" (McFarlane & Slide, The Encyclopedia of British Film, 4th ed.).
