Nudes. Afterword by Ingrid Sischy

New York: Pantheon Books, 1991. 1st Edition. Oblong quarto, publisher's oxblood cloth, spine gilt, upper board blindstamped, publisher's dark gray endpapers, original photo-illustrated dust jacket.

Exhibition catalog published on the occasion of a 1991 show of nudes taken by award-winning photographer Lee Friedlander’s held at MoMA. While capturing factory valleys by day, Friedlander began taking nude portraits of women at night after he was prompted by a colleague to take a stab at the enduring genre. Fleshy and unsettling while still intimate and sensuous, the photos he captured between the late-70s and mid-80s evolved into a key series of his oeuvre. The much-anticipated solo show presented 52 photos, including his iconic shots of Madonna from 1979 that ended up in Playboy after a lengthy "skin war" over the images among many major mags. Illustrated with black-and-white plates; afterword by writer, cultural critic, and editor-in-chief of Interview Ingrid Sischy. Fine in unclipped dust jacket. Item #5429
