Hug Me

New York: Harper & Row, 1977. 1st Edition. Small quarto, publisher's illustrated white paper-covered boards, original illustrated dust jacket.

First edition of Patti Stren's first children’s book published in the US, inscribed by her to New York artist and Harper & Row designer, Gloria Greenberg Bressler: "...to my 'sweet' gloria… / thank you for helping this book…be…'i think you’re terrific!' / me too! [drawing of a bird] flutter / love, love, patti…and elliot and…of course thelma claypits!" Written in the waning days of the Free Love counterculture movement, this cutecore story centers on a lonely young porcupine, Elliot Kravitz, in search of a hug. His prickly quills get in the way until he meets girl porcupine of his dreams Thelma Claypits. Illustrated with black-and-white line drawings with splashes of yellow. Inscribed to front endpaper. Price-clipped dust jacket with light soiling and edgewear, and several small closed tears. Scarce in jacket, with nice association/presentation inscription. Item #5316
