First edition catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition presenting the work of 22 European artists held at MoMA in 1955. Curated by Andrew Carnduff Ritchie, the contemporary director of the museum’s Painting and Sculpture department, the show presented pieces by French (Bazaine, Dubuffet, Hajdu, Manessier, Pignon, Richier and Soulages), German (Uhlmann, Werner and Winter), British (Armitage, Bacon, Butler, Chadwick and Scott), Italian (Afro, Burri, Capogrossi, Minguzzi), Dutch (Appel), and Portuguese (Vieira da Silva) postwar artists, many of which had never been on view in the US. The present volume comprises text by Ritchie and statements by each artist. Illustrated with over 100 plates in black-and-white; with bibliography by MoMAs's chief librarian Bernard Karpel. Dust jacket designed by renowned midcentury designer Alvin Lustig. Top corner to upper board worn; moderate chipping and edgewear to unclipped dust jacket, with tape repairs to verso. Good.
