Changes. Journal of Arts and Entertainment. Issue No. 84

New York: Changes, 1973. Tabloid newspaper, newsprint printed in black-and-white and color (measures 15 x 11.5 inches).

Issue 84 of New York-based monthly rag Changes. The scarce and little documented periodical was a part of the underground press boom of the 1960s and 70s, a period in which alternative periodicals proliferated. Similar to other countercultural New York papers such as the East Village Eye and East Village Other, Changes covered the city’s art, literary, theater, and musical scenes, presented exclusive interviews with notable writers and creatives, reviewed avant-garde and popular literature, art, films, and albums, and featured works by prominent underground artists. This issue comprises of a feature on Watergate with contributions by Tom Wolfe, Susan Sontag, Yoko Ono, Louise Nevelson, Ishmael Reed, Will Eisner, Allen Ginserg, Olatunji, among others; a feature on Black theater groups; a review of the 1973 Newport Jazz Festival; review of Mrya Friedman's biography of Janis Joplin; photos by contributing photographers Peter Hujar and Sy Johnson; Elsa First's feature on Dr. Lilly's workshops on New Conciousness; a review of a Man Ray exhibit at the Met; a profile of Joel Siegel by underground cartoonist Will Eisner. Profusely illustrated with black-and-white photos and ads. Light embrowning to newsprint, light edgewear. Very good. Scarce, with no copies listed in OCLC. Item #5147
