Native Funk & Flash. An Emerging Folk Art
[San Francisco]: Scrimshaw Press, 1974. 1st Edition. Oblong quarto, publisher's illustrated stiff paper wraps.
First edition of this monograph on San Francisco Bay area customized clothing and decorative folk arts from the late 60s and early 70s, collected and edited by garment artist Alexandra Jacopetti. “These artists are trying to show us something of their inner selves. (I once tried to get an apprentice to stitch her inner demons onto her pants. I still wonder if she ever got them out.) We want to externalize these states so that they may be read by others able to understand the language, attracting companions of the brotherhood.” Jacopetti omits patterns, techniques, and production-specs in favor of color photos to emphasize “the message from within.” Light toning and soiling to wraps, bottom corner banged. Very good. Item #5135
