Fool for Love. [Press Kit]

Los Angeles: Cannon Films, Inc., 1985. Quarto, publisher's glossy paper folder, three stapled mimeograph press releases, ten glossy black-and-white photos (measuring 8" x 10").

"Fool for Love leaves everyone with something just a little different. It works on their own experiences and leaves them with feelings, not details. That is Sam Shepard's ART" (Robert Altman). Original promotional press kit for Robert Altman’s film adaptation of Sam Shepard’s 1983 Pulitzer Prize- nominated play. Written shortly after breaking up with his first wife, the iconic downtown playwright’s southwestern melodrama revolves around the meeting of two semi-incestuous lovers at a remote motel in the desert. Starring Shepard as the leading man (Altman’s sole request was that the author be the star), Kim Basinger, and Harry Dean Stanton, the film was the first of Shepard’s plays to be adapted to the screen. One of a series of films based on adaptations of stage plays directed by Altman in the 80s, Fool for Love did not fare well at the box office or with critics. However, it has since been reconsidered by film historians as one of the leading 80s films that set the tone for the upcoming indie movement of new American cinema. This press kit includes ten glossy black-and-white film stills featuring Shepard and other cast members and three stapled packets (a two-page opening announcement, 28 pages of production notes, and a photocopy of Shepard’s cover and feature in a 1985 issue of Newsweek on the play and film), all housed in a glossy white paper folder from the film’s producer, Cannon Films. Photos and mimeographs fine, moderate wear to folder. Scarce. Item #5121
