Watercolors. 1989-2001

"I like to think of Mats Gustafson as a modern artist. I don't think I'd call him a contemporary artist, because that's too au courant. And I certainly don't think of him as a modernist, because that would imply that he considers himself superior to the ancients. I think he's a modern artist because he is evolved" (from the introduction). Inscribed limited edition of the only survey to date on visionary fashion illustrator Mats Gustafson, published on the occasion of the first major retrospective of his work at Stockholm’s Millesgarden in 2013. After working as a set designer in his youth, Gustafson transitioned into fashion illustration, earning employment from eminent fashion houses for his elegant use of watercolors, pastels, and paper cut-outs. During a time when fashion illustration was oversaturated with photographic interpretation, the artist’s expressive and timeless work, particularly his deft silhouettes, transformed the genre. Illustrated with 50 color plates of Gustafson’s drawings and watercolors, charting his personal and professional artistic development. With an introduction by writer and downtown tastemaker Glenn O’Brien. Inscribed to documentary filmmaker and graphic designer Gael Towey and her husband, graphic designer Stephen Doyle. Number 433 of 1250 copies. No dust jacket, as issued. Fine. Item #5087
