Shelter. Lloyd Kahn, Bob Easton.

Bolinas, CA: Shelter Publications, 1973. 1st Edition. Folio, publisher's stiff illustrated paper wraps.

First edition of Lloyd Kahn’s self-published counterculture catalog of the human habitat. This illustrated reference guide details the “hippie building” experience and alternative housing structures including caves, huts, tents, barns, housecars, geodesic domes (Kahn’s favorite) and other experiments. Kahn first garnered recognition as the “shelter editor” for the iconic reference book The Whole Earth Catalog (1968). Shelter, the first title issued by Kahn’s extant press, sold more than 300,000 copies and has been translated into several languages. Notably, it has recently undergone a revival due to the surge of interest in tiny homes and self-sufficient living. Richly illustrated in black-and-white and color with photos, reproductions, diagrams, collages, and designs, many accompanied by instructional guides. Co-edited by architect Bob Easton. Rubbing to edges, small closed tear to upper wrap. Very good. Item #5063
