Paris: Éditions Cassini, 2018. 1st Edition. 2 vols., folio, publisher's stiff paper wraps printed in black-and-white, loose in signatures, original oversized shipping envelope.
Eighteenth issue of the French cult fashion magazine Egoïste. This double-issue includes profiles on Xavier Dolan, Jessica Chastain, Martin Scorcese, Alexandra Conunova, Maurizio Cattelan, Amal Clooney, Milla Jovovich, Isabelle Adjani, Christopher Hampton, among others, by Adam Gopnick, Patrick Besson, Christine Angot, and more; with photos by Ellen Von Unwerth, Donata Wenders, Paolo Roversi, and Max Vadukul; and notable ad campaigns for Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, and Chaumet. The magazine is the passion project of Nicole Wisniak, who founded the magazine when she was 26 in 1977 with an investment of $1500 from her parents. Egoïste has remained essentially a one-woman production that Wisniak only publishes when "it's ready"; in an interview with the Guardian she said "It's not speaking about next week's movie or next week's book. It's about lasting. It's like a bet to see who will still be interesting in 10 years." The magazine has enjoyed such a celebrated status within its industry that fashion houses do not pay to have existing advertisements included in its pages, but pay to have Wisniak conceptualize and create in-house adverts. The ads are often narrative-driven and depict mini-vignettes, blurring the line between advertising and editorial. Only nineteen issues have been released over the course of the magazine's tenure. Wisniak famously works from a Marie Antoinette-style bed in her apartment in Paris's 6th Arrondissement. Loose in signatures, illustrated with gorgeous black-and-white photos throughout. Fine.
