True Blue

New York: Sire Records, 1986. 1st Edition. 12" LP, printed labels, original photo-illustrated album sleeve, original double-panel poster.

Original LP vinyl record of Madonna’s third studio album, featuring classic hits "Papa Don’t Preach," "Open Your Heart," and "La Isla Bonita." The world’s top-selling album in 1986, all nine of its tracks were co-produced and co-written by the pop legend herself alongside producers Stephen Bray and Patrick Leonard of Sire Records. Considered more sophisticated and substantive than her smash success Like a Virgin (1984), the record’s lyrics, and particularly those of the album’s title single, were famously inspired by her feelings for her then-husband Sean Penn. While an overt tribute to Penn ("true blue" was one of his favorite expressions), the album is now best known for demonstrating her transition into musical maturity and artistic credibility. Complete with printed lyrics sleeve (with a liner note that reads "This is dedicated to my husband, the coolest guy in the universe") and an original folding poster matching the album’s Hollywood glam-inspired cover, captured by fashion photographer Herb Ritts. Sire record #R-143811. Light creasing and edgewear to album sleeve. Near fine. Item #4940
