The Lives and Times of Captain Beefheart

Manchester, UK: Babylon Books, c.1975. Presumed 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's photo-illustrated wraps.

Archival dossier on legendary avant-garde musician Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart. Assembled from British artist and underground publisher David Britton's collection of magazine and newspaper clippings, the jam-packed compilation was for decades the only source on Beefheart’s life and career, and the only place fans could find lyrics to studio albums Trout Mask Replica (1969) and Lick My Decals Off, Baby (1970). Contains several articles on Beefheart and his Magic Band, including music critic Langdon Winner’s 1970 Rolling Stone cover story, press interviews, album and single reviews, lyrics, poems, a press release for an exhibit of Beefheart’s art at Liverpool’s Bluecoat Gallery in 1972, a discography, and black-and-white photos and drawings, many by Britton. Published by John Muir's Babylon Books, which specialized in handcrafted booklets created in close collaboration with musicians and bands. Presumed first edition, with discography only extending to 1975 (editions issued in 1977 and 1980 have been recorded). Minor soiling and creasing to wraps, else fine. Item #4463
