The New Cars 1964

San Francisco: Fraenkel Gallery, 2011. 1st Edition. Oblong quarto, publisher's blue textured leatherette boards, spine and upper board stamped in silver and gilt, black-and-white photo label mounted to upper board, gold endpapers.

"I just put the cars out in the world, instead of on a pedestal." Exhibition catalog for a 2011 show of Lee Freidlander’s classic car series, at San Francisco's Fraenkel Gallery. Upon being hired to shoot up-and-coming cars for Harper’s Bazaar in 1964, then little-known photographer Friedlander took an unorthodox approach, photographing the models outside fast food restaurants, furniture stores, beauty parlors, in used car lots, and other déclassé environs. The photos, early demonstrations of Friedlander’s visual language of the American social landscape, were predictably disapproved of by Bazaar’s editor-in chief. Illustrated with black-and-white plates; introduction by Fraenkel Gallery founder Jeffrey Fraenkel; designed by Katy Homans. Publisher's presentation card laid in. No dust jacket, as issued. Fine.
