New York: Zucker Art Books, 2006. 1st Edition. Small quarto, publisher's photo-illustrated stiff paper wraps.
Catalog of artists' books by Swiss-German artist Roth, published on the occasion of a two-part exhibition at Carolina Nitsch Contemporary Art and Josée Bienvenu Gallery, New York (October 12 - November 25, 2006). Roth, closely associated with Concrete poetry and the Fluxus group, began his career as a commercial artist, rising to prominence in the 1960s with a series of boundary-breaking handmade artists' books (Snow, Copley Book, Mundunculum, etc.). He continued to experiment with the medium for much of his life, inaugurating his own Collected Works series in 1968, and eventually left behind hundreds of one-of-a-kind books and editions. "His books are as varied as his works in drawing and painting and occasionally just as cumbersome and strange" (from the introduction by art historian and curator Dobke). Illustrated throughout with color and black-and-white plates and reproductions; with sectional introductions and detailed captions. Bilingual text in English and German. One of 970 unnumbered copies (from a total edition of 1000). Fine. Item #416
