Jill. Philip Larkin.

New York: St. Martin's Press, 1964. 1st US Edition. Octavo, publisher’s rust cloth, spine gilt, original printed dust jacket.

First US edition of English poet Philip Larkin’s first novel. Written when Larkin was just 21 years old, the book follows working class hero John Kemp as he contends with alienation as an impoverished literature student at Oxford. The eponymous Jill is Kemp's imaginary friend, whom he invents to impress his boisterous and wealthy roommate. While the coming-of-age novel received little critical attention upon original publication in 1946, it was later reappraised as a landmark postwar novel and republished in the UK and in the US. Rubbing to spine ends. Unclipped dust jacket with fading to spine, a few shallow chips and tears. Very good. Item #3986
