New York: The Dial Press, 1982. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher's blue cloth over white paper-covered boards, spine gilt, original illustrated dust jacket.
A Barnes bestiary. Originally a well-respected journalist and illustrator, Barnes later turned to prose and longer form fiction writing after befriending a group of Greenwich Village Bohemian artists and writers including Edmund Wilson and Bernice Abbott, who afforded her the opportunity to publish her work. She then turned to an expatriate lifestyle, living in Paris and the UK, before returning to Greenwich Village in the 1940s. Barnes's fantastical ABCDiary was published shortly after her death, and was her first book in over 20 years. Illustrated with the author's own black-and-white drawings. Light soiling to unclipped dust jacket, else fine. Item #3972
