New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc., 1971. 1st Edition. 16mo, publisher's illustrated stiff paper wraps, french flaps, unopened.
Sculptor Claes Oldenburg’s miniaturized "artist’s sketchbook." While predominantly known for his outsized replicas of everyday objects, this collection comprises 50 scaled down pages of drawings, writings, and clippings from his personal notebooks. Exhibiting the artist's explosive inner workings and playful spirit as he rose to prominence in the mid-60s New York art scene, these selections were recolored by Oldenburg with inspiration from comic book color palettes (notably, Oldenburg was the only Pop artist to produce professionally drawn comics). Illustrated mostly in color; with selected bibliography and an additional catalog of comments on each reproduction by the artist. Rear wrap illustrated with a portrait of Oldenburg by feminist interdisciplinary artist (and his girlfriend at the time) Hannah Wilke. Published simultaneously in hardcover. Creasing and light rubbing to spine. Very good. Item #3491
