New York: St. Martin's Press, 1975. 1st US Edition. Folio, publisher's black cloth, spine and upper board stamped in silver, original photo-illustrated dust jacket.
First US edition of American photographer Will McBride and Swiss psychiatrist Dr. Helga Fleischhauer-Hardt’s exceedingly controversial 1970s photo primer on the birds and the bees. Initially issued in 1974 by a Lutheran Church-sponsored children's publishing company in Germany, McBride and Fleischhauer-Hardt's sex ed manual explores the forbidden world of sex from the perplexed perspective of two toddlers. An ill-fated attempt to explore children’s sexuality in a frank manner, the unorthodox book received a parlous reception. New York Times journalist Linda Wolfe deemed it a "child-abusive joke," while the LA Times praised McBride’s photographs as "beautiful...graceful, charming, and elegant." The overall consensus, however, was one of outrage, and although considered "non-obscene" by the Supreme Court, St. Martin’s Press was forced to finally withdraw the book from publication in 1982 after a slew of obscenity charges were brought against them. Illustrated throughout with McBride's black-and-white photos, most full-page; with explanatory text by Fleischhauer-Hardt, advancing Freud’s controversial theories on infantile sexuality and attendant developmental stages, and with appendix and suggested reading material. Included in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger’s esteemed photobook series and bibliography. Parr & Badger II:26-27. Faint embrowning to endpapers from binder's glue; mild toning and edgewear to unclipped dust jacket. Near fine. Item #3353
