Garden City: Doubleday, 1976. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher's blue cloth over grey paper covered boards, spine stamped in silver, original dust jacket.
First edition of acclaimed American author Ann Beattie’s debut novel. Issued simultaneously with her haunting and gently humorous short story collection Distortions, the dual publication succeeded in establishing her as a defining voice of her generation. The book received a film adaptation written and directed by Joan Micklin Silver, originally released as Head Over Heels in 1978. Although a box-office bust, Silver was able to pull off a new version with Beattie’s original title which was re-released in 1982 to a warm reception. Dust jacket designed by Paul Bacon, prolific illustrator and pioneer of the “big book look”; author photo by artist Trisha Orr. Toning to top edge of boards, light dustiness to top edge of text block and overall light rubbing to edges. Price clipped dust jacket with some creasing and staining to verso. Very good. Item #3166
