New York: Pantheon Books, 1987. 1st Edition. Folio, publisher's illustrated stiff paper wraps.
Anthology of Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly’s influential comics and graphics magazine Raw. The visually eclectic and philosophically-minded periodical was the flagship publication of the comics movement of the late 70s/early 80s and was celebrated for its uniquely over-sized and often hand-assembled format, creative packaging, experimental graphics, long-form narratives, and diversity of contributors. Although the publications weren't explicit rivals, Raw was widely considered a more sophisticated counterpoint to R. Crumb’s renowned, lowbrow Weirdo, created only a year after the first issue of Raw. This landmark anthology, comprised of selections from the magazine's first three issues, contains seminal classics from New Wave cartoonists in both Europe and the US, including Spiegelman and Mouly, Jerry Moriarty, Joost Swarte, Mark Beyer, Gary Panter, Mark Newgarden, Catherine Millet, and more. Illustrated in color and black-and-white; with Spielgelman's color comic "Two-Fisted Painters'' and Mark Beyer's "City of Terror" bubblegum cards tipped in as issued. Stated first edition to copyright page. Minor rubbing to extremities, else fine. Item #3119
