New Jersey: David Rago Modern Auctions, 2000. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's illustrated side-stapled paper wraps.
Thoroughly illustrated 600-lot auction catalog for two selections at David Rago Modern Auctions, in New Jersey; the life collection of 20th-century textile designer Angelo Testa and 20th-century bakelite, designer costume, modernist, and Mexican silver jewelry pieces. In 1945, Testa became the one of the first graduates of László Moholy-Nagy's short-lived New Bauhaus school in Chicago. He then founded his own firm, Angelo Testa & Co, which designed and licensed his abstract patterned textiles to leading producers of mid-century modern furniture such as Herman Miller, Knoll Associates and Jens Risom until his death in 1984. This auction marks the first extensive offering of Testa's work, including student pieces from the early 40s, fabric designs and original yardage from his firm, prints commissioned by IBM rugs, wall-hangings and various sketches, studies, paintings and sculptures. Auction-house consultant and author of Being Bold With Bakelite Matthew Burkholz curated the second selection: "Don't make any pre-judgments about it because it is called plastic...Get beyond that. The top stuff is rarer than gold and highly collectible" (Chicago Tribune). Some rubbing to wraps, near fine. Scarce. Item #2897
