Pasadena: Twelvetrees Press, 1987. 1st Edition. Large quarto, publisher's navy cloth, upper board and spine stamped in black, original dust jacket lettered in white.
Collection of black-and-white photos of jazz musicians by American photographer William Claxton. Born in Pasadena, California, Claxton began photographing up-and-coming jazz stars (notably Chet Baker) while studying psychology at the University of California. Over the decades, his work appeared on movie posters, record covers, in fashion spreads, and magazines. Many of the photos collected here were previously published in his 1961 book Jazz-Life, a German commission assigned to Claxton (the book wasn't published in English until 2005). With images of Baker, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Dewey Jackson, John Coltrane, and many others. Essay by Leonard Feather, with an afterword by Terry Southern. First edition, one of 4000 unnumbered copies. Light dustiness to black dust jacket and slight discoloration to edges of endpapers. Near fine. Item #2464
