Of Angels and Apocalypse: The Cinema of Derek Jarman

Of Angels and Apocalypse: The Cinema of Derek Jarman

Minneapolis: Walker Art Center, 1986. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher's stapled, black-and-white printed stiff paper wraps.

Exhibition catalog for a touring US retrospective of the work of British filmmaker Jarman, whose lush, unapologetic depiction of LGBTQ characters and concerns was at the time controversial. All five of Jarman's features to that point were screened (Sebastiane, Jubilee, The Tempest, The Angelic Conversation, and Caravaggio), as were his many early Super 8 and 16mm shorts. "Disregarding the often puritanical templates on offer from the 'counter-cinema' Jarman has instead, in utopian spirit, sought out angels, while celebrating visual pleasure and luxuriating in an excess of theatricality and painterly effect" (from the essay by film scholar Horrigan). Illustrated with five black-and-white film stills and a portrait of Jarman; with a complete filmography. Light soiling and rubbing to wraps. Near fine. Item #238
