Oceans of Love, Tons of Kisses. Photographs of Candy Darling

New York: A. Robert Samuel Gallery, Ltd., 1982. Black-and-white photo-illustrated exhibition poster (measures 24" x 14").

Exhibition poster for a group show of photos of Warhol Superstar and trans icon Candy Darling (A. Robert Samuel Gallery, New York, May 12-June 26, 1982). Photogrpahers whose portraits of Darling were exhibited include Peter Beard, Cecil Beaton, Kenn Duncan, Bob Gruen, Philippe Halsmann, Peter Hujar, Gerard Malanga, Robert Mapplethorpe, Fred McDarrah, and Jack Mitchell (whose portrait of a cross-legged Darling seated on a high stool adorns the poster), among others. The quantity and range of photographers Darling sat for is a testament to her centrality as a downtown muse of the late 1960s and early 70s, before her untimely death of lymphoma in 1974. "Her dear and loyal friend Jeremiah Newton has put together this exhibition of photographs...and called it 'Oceans of Love, Tons of Kisses,' which is how Candy signed her autographs.... She always gave her public what it wanted, and from her it wanted glamour and beauty – the eyelashes on and the roots always done, the whole dream-spun illusion" (Julie Baumgold, New York Magazine, May 31, 1982). Fine. Item #2362
