New York: J.J. Augustin Publishers, 1945. 2nd Edition. Quarto, publisher's beige cloth, spine and upper board stamped in brown, original photo-illustrated dust jacket.
Russian-born and Paris-based fashion photographer Hoyningen-Huene's second collection of archeological travel photos, this outing focused on the statuary and monuments of ancient Egypt. Hoyningen-Huene pioneered the "age of glamour" with his work for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, but ultimately gave up fashion photography after World War II, which he thought had destroyed elegance. Illustrated with lavish black-and-white photos, this collection demonstrates his post-fashion commitment to travel and spiritual exploration – though not too post-fashion, as the volume's dust jacket was designed by master of fashion magazine design, Alexey (Alexis) Brodovitch. Text by German Egyptologist Steindorff. Originally published in 1943. Bookplate of Denis Conan Doyle to front free endpaper, with gift inscription on title-page to his wife, the Georgian Princess Nina Mdivani: "To my darling, I will only find the real romance of Egypt when I see it with you. Denis. August, 1946"; and with Mdivani's ownership signature to half-title. Denis Percy Stewart Conan Doyle was Arthur Conan Doyle's first child from his second marriage. Price-clipped dust jacket with shallow loss to spine ends, corners lightly chipped and light soiling. Very good, uncommon in dust jacket, with appropriately glamorous provenance. Item #2177
