The Slightly Irregular Fire Engine. Or the Hithering Thithering Djinn

New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 1971. 1st Edition. Folio, publisher's green cloth, spine stamped in black and red, black endpapers, original illustrated dust jacket.

First edition of American writer Barthelme's only children's book and winner of the 1972 National Book Award in the category Children's Books. Praised for his minimalist style, Barthelme stated that his "post-modernist" children's book was "written to fit" the collage illustrations, which were made from 19th-century engravings and phrases from type specimen books. He likened his approaches to writing as that of collage: ''The principle of collage is the central principle of all art in the 20th century. Dealing With Not-Knowing." Very small ink stain to upper board. Fine in unclipped dust jacket, and uncommonly bright overall. Item #2078
