New York: D.A.P./Distributed Art Publishers, 1993. 1st Edition. Large quarto, publisher's black cloth, spine and upper board blindstamped, dark purple endpapers, original printed dust jacket.
Signed first edition of Friedlander's collection of large-format tritone plates. Intended as a singular work of many parts, the 200 images gathered here depict signs, posters, graffiti, and other public messages. Friedlander's expansive work is a deep investigation of urban written vernacular and its near endless potential conceits. The book opens with pictures of individual letters, followed by numerals, and ending with complete written messages whose range of attitudes – commercial, religious, personal, political, sexual, and romantic – is heightened or re-contextualized by careful juxtapositions made by the photographer. With a list of plates. The series was shown internationally, beginning with a 1994 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Signed by Friedlander on the half-title. Fine, in unclipped dust jacket.
