Originally published in Mademoiselle magazine in 1956, "A Christmas Memory" is a primarily autobiographical short story by writer Capote in which the author paints a retrospective portrait of seven year-old Buddy and his unusual yet impervious friendship with his distant and elderly cousin, Miss Sook Faulk, in rural Alabama during a Christmas season in the 1930s. Considered a "gem of a holiday story" (School Library Journal, starred review), this beloved and bittersweet vignette has been broadcast, recorded, filmed, and staged multiple times.
