Robert Frank: Moving Out [Inscribed Poster]

Yokohama: Yokohama Museum of Art, 1995. Color and black-and-white printed one-sheet poster (measuring 28.5" x 40").

Large inscribed exhibition poster for Swiss-American photographer Frank, issued in conjunction with a 1994-95 traveling retrospective of his work at the National Gallery of Art; Yokohama Museum of Art (the venue promoted in the present poster); Kunsthaus Zurich; Stedelijk Museum; Whitney Museum of American Art; and Lannan Foundation. Featuring photos from his early books (The Americans, The Lines of My Hand), lesser-known film stills, and more recent black-and-white and color composites, the exhibition "present[ed] the evolution of [Frank's] art form from its early manifestations in Switzerland during World War II to its mature expression of the 1990s” (from the introduction to the exhibition catalog). The poster reproduces the 1989 mixed media photo-collage "Mute/Blind," which resides at the National Gallery of Art. Inscribed by Frank to the lower border in black marker: "To Jay in America on a Sunny Morning / February 1st 1995 / Good luck / Robert Frank." Printed text in English and Japanese. Adhesive residue to verso at corners and center of top and bottom edges, two small punctures near bottom edge, a few small nicks to edges. Overall, better than very good, and uncommon signed or inscribed. Item #1697
