New York: Janus Films, c.1968. 1st Edition. Small quarto, publisher's white stiff paper wraps printed in blue.
Circa 1968 trade catalog for movie theater operators of films being marketed by film distributor Janus. Founded in 1956, Janus introduced the major international filmmakers of the day – including Bergman, Varda, Antonioni, Federico Fellini, François Truffaut, Yasujiro Ozu and dozens more – to a generation of US cinéastes, almost single-handedly creating the audience for international arthouse film. The present catalog features promotional photos and production notes for dozens of their offerings (with several indicating availability dates in the 1968 calendar year, suggesting the year publication here), with longer profiles of Bergman, Harold Lloyd, Truffaut, and a series of shorts billed as New Cinema. An order sheet in the rear gives rental rates. The number two appears on the spine, suggesting this was one in a series of catalogs. Minor soiling and toning to wraps, light creasing to spine. Near fine. Item #1524
