Queer writer Sam Steward’s carnal cop drama with a cover illustration by Tom of Finland. Originally an English instructor of Methodist origins, Steward left teaching to become an unofficial collaborator with Alfred Kinsey at the Institute for Sex Research and a full-time tattoo artist. After befriending gay writers and artists such as Paul Cadmus, George Platt Lynes, and Julien Green, Steward began writing and publishing erotica under his pen name (one of many) Phil Andros. Originally published as San Francisco Hustler in 1970, this book is considered Steward’s most "sexually exuberant," featuring an S/M love triangle among three police officers. Notably, Steward was thrilled with Finland’s illustrations, writing to him: "You have exactly caught the real Phil just as I had always envisioned him! The cool, calculating (yet sympathetic) look in the eyes, the wonderfully sensual carving of those mobile lips, the torso–all is exact, even down to the veins in the arms!"
